Indoor Tanning Your Safer Alternative to the Sun

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Linda Moore Whether you are trying indoor tanning for the first time to get ready for a vacation or to keep your summer tan all year long, there are rules that should be followed. These rules are necessary for your safety as well as for your health. Many people visit tanning salons thinking that they do not present the same health risks as tanning in the sun. While the risks are less, they are still there. The traditional tanning salon depends upon the use of a tanning bed to produce a tan for a customer. This process is known to expose the body to the harmful UVA rays and can cause skin cancer. If you are going to use this method of indoor tanning, use a lotion with an SPF of not less than 8, but not more than 15. Because of the dangers of traditional indoor tanning, and the fact that people still want to maintain a tan throughout the winter, the industry has invented some answers. Sunless tanning booths and sunless tanning products are the most popular choices with consumers. They are safe, look good and are easily applied. Sunless tanning booths operate by literally spraying a mist that contains DHA to create the illusion of a tan. DHA is the same color additive that is used in cosmetics, it covers the body in a color-in this case a varying degree of tan. This type of tanning has had drawbacks when applying color to the feet and hands of a person, these issues have been addressed and are not a concern in most tanning salons. A spray on tan does not last long, approximately 3-5 days. For this reason, the tanning industry has developed a number of systems that allow you to perform this procedure in the comfort of your home. These systems can be found in local stores and salons as well as in catalogues and online. Sunless tanning lotions first made their appearance on the market some time ago. Everyone knows the reputation that these products had for leaving the skin orange instead of tan. These early products turned many consumers off to this alternative to sun tanning. Thankfully, the industry has been working on this particular problem and has solved it for most people. Be careful, however, the cheaper lotions may still turn skin orange. Sunless tanning lotions work in much the same way as the spray tanners. They coat the skin with a DHA coloring. The biggest difference is that it is applied by hand and at home. It is important to carefully follow all of the instructions for use that are printed on the package. This very important step will help you avoid elbows, feet and hands that appear darker than the rest of your body. This type of a tan lasts about the same as the airbrush solution, about 3-5 days. However, by applying a layer or two everyday, you can build upon the tan that you are creating. Therefore, you are able to control how deep the color of the tan becomes. Indoor tanning is becoming a safer alternative to lying in the sun. As the population learns more about the dangers of the sun, they are looking for their tan from safer methods. The Coming of Samhain

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Jacqueline S I find myself smiling at the thought of the coming Wiccan Celebration. Samhain, it is, I must state my favorite holiday in the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. Ask me why, and I am not sure if I know the answer myself. Samhain is celebrated on and around Old Hallows Eve, for all non Wiccans, this would be Halloween. Some traditions celebrate this day on the 1st of November, however neither is correct nor Incorrect. Samhain is the night that we celebrate all that have passed before us, with a drink in my hand and a carved pumpkin at my side, I hail a toast to my departed mother, and her mother before and wish them well on their journey. With the veil between our worlds at its thinnest, this is the night that along with their departed freinds they can pull up a chair and sit awhile. It is as we Wiccans call it, The Spirit Night. Samhain along with Beltane are the only two holidays that we can call upon the spirits with ease, and which are said to be at this time journeying on their way to Summerland and pass through our time. To some this night is known as The Day that does not exist due to the walls that hold the Spiritual and living world apart are dissolved. Skathach, the Celtic Warrior, Lowers her sword during the night. This time is also known for the reflexion and meditation on death, as well as honoring ones ancestors whom have passed. We light candles in rememberance, set extra settings at the table, and pull up extra chairs around the fires to invite our loved ones back for the evening. On this night I always bury an apple in the yard just outside my door for the spirits that are lost, or for those that have no relatives to honor them. The use of herbs to celebrate this time of year are always a major role in the Wiccan celebrations. Use Mugwort, Sage, Catnip and Mandrake. We can also use this time to celebrate the Darker Magick of Wicca as we honor the Dark Mother and Father, no matter what religion we are, each of us should remember our families and loved ones that have passed. It is an age old tradition and one that honors those that we loved the dearest. Help them on their way by placing lit candles in your windows. With a glass in my hand and a pumpkin lit I sit, wait and honor those gone Jacqueline S is proprietor of www.darkmoonmagick.com Jacqueline was born in the Uk in 1969, and moved to Canada when she was 20yrs old. She became interested in Wicca and Paganism many years ago and began a solitary practice along with taking several classes at a local metaphysical shop. The classes helped her gain friendships along the way and also to become more comfortable in herself. She began making her own herb blends a few years ago and it escalated from there. She enjoys what she does and finds working with different herbs and making soaps and lotions from scratch very rewarding. She started sending off handmade soaps to friends and family and they just loved them and she makes herbal blends for people who ask. Secrets to Answered Prayer - Challenge Your Beliefs

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Rob Marshall He sighed as he thought to himself, “Why do I keep coming back here? I come here every day and nothing ever changes, nothing happens. When the angel moves the water, someone always gets into the pool before I do. If I just had someone who could help me, but there’s no one who will come and wait here with me. If there was just some other way to get healed.” Suddenly someone’s shadow came over him. He looked up, squinting into the sun to see who it was. The man who was standing there looked down at him and asked, “Do you want to get well?” “Do I want to get well?” the man thought. “Yes, I want to get well, but I can’t,” he replied. He told the stranger about not being able to get into the pool after the angel moved the water. But the stranger looked down at him and said, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” He couldn’t believe it; he felt a surge of energy in his legs. Was this really happening? Was he healed? He pushed himself up, picked up his mat and began walking. It was a miracle! Maybe you’ve prayed for something for a long time but nothing seemed to change. And to add to your frustration, you kept seeing other people getting answers to their prayers while yours seemed to be unanswered. Perhaps you recognize this story from John chapter 5 about the lame man who had been coming to the pool called Bethesda. In the story it says that a great multitude of people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed were at the pool, each of them hoping that he would be the first one to get into the pool and be healed. Have you ever wondered, when there were so many people there who wanted to be healed, why it was that Jesus only healed one of them? We can speculate about a lot of things. Was this man more righteous than any of the other people? No! When we read the rest of the story, we see that Jesus found the man at the temple, and warned him that he would need to stop sinning or something worse would happen. So at the time Jesus healed the man, he was a sinner. Was the man more deserving? No! He was just one person who was loved by God, just like all the rest. God never shows favoritism, He loves us all equally. Perhaps the one thing that set this man apart from everyone else, was that he was willing to believe that there was another way to be healed. Maybe he understood that stepping into the pool was one way, but not the only way, to be made well. This man, unlike everyone else at the pool, was willing to question his beliefs and have the faith that it was God who heals, and not the pool at Bethesda. One of the first secrets to answered prayer is that we have to be willing to question our current beliefs about answered prayer. We have to be willing to recognize that it’s God who answers our prayers. It’s not about a formula we might use, or anything else. It’s simply about having faith in a loving God. The beliefs that we hold affect our thoughts and emotions. They influence our actions and they even effect what we are willing, and able, to see. An experiment was done where a room full of people were asked to watch a video. The video showed two basketball teams in different colored uniforms passing the ball back and forth. They were asked to count how many times the ball was passed to someone on the team wearing the yellow uniforms. When the video was over, the researchers asked them if they had seen anything unusual, and two or three of the people raised their hands. The researchers then replayed the video and everyone laughed when they saw that part way through the video, someone dressed in a gorilla outfit walked into the middle of the picture and waved several times. Why had most of the people missed the gorilla? The simple answer is: They were looking for something else. Like the people laying around the pool at Bethesda, we can get so caught up in thinking about how God has to answer our prayers, that we’re not open to Him doing it some other way. If you believe that God will only answer your prayers if you meet certain requirements, challenge your belief. If you believe that you are not worthy of God’s love, challenge your belief. God answers our prayers because He loves us, wants our joy to be full, and so that He can glorify His name. If you believe anything else, challenge your belief. How To Deal With A Difficult Boss

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Tristan Loo Most people at some point in their lives have to deal with a difficult boss. Difficult supervisors vary in personality from being a little pushy or rude, all the way to being downright abusive. Many people feel that an abusive boss has control of their personal life outside of work by lowering their self-esteem and making them live in constant fear. The role of a supervisor sometimes attracts certain controlling-type personalities because they crave the power it gives them and because they lack such control in their own personal lives. A supervisor has complete control over your most basic human needsyour ability to put food on the table and a roof over your head. These are powerful motivating factors that allow a difficult supervisor to control people out of fear of losing these basic needs. We may not be able to always correct their behavior, but we should never have to live in fear and let our difficult boss control our lives. Here are some strategies on handling a difficult boss situation. 1. Always have a plan B. Most people are scared about having a discussion with their boss concerning their abusive behavior because they fear reprimand or losing their job as a result of it. Their fear is usually justified if the supervisor is a control-freak and feels that their subordinate is threatening their control. Before you deal with any type of conflict, you always need to have a plan B in case things dont work out. A plan B is the best alternative that you can come up without having to negotiate anything with your boss. In this type of scenario, your best plan B would probably take the form of having an actual job offer in hand with another employer before you have your talk. By not having a back-up plan, you have given your abusive boss even more leverage over you because they know you have no where else to go. Having a plan B, however, empowers you with the ability to walk-away at any time should the negotiation not go right. Increase your power and have a plan B before you deal with the conflict. 2. Never react to verbal abuse or harsh criticism with emotion. This will always get you into more trouble than you started with because it will become a war between egos and chances are good that your boss has a bigger ego than you havehence why he is difficult in the first place. When a personal attack is made on you, they are trying to bait you into reacting emotionally because once you react, you become an easy target for additional attacks. The key then is not to react, but to acknowledge and move on. By doing this, you effectively strip all of the power behind their verbal attacks away from your abusive boss, without creating conflict. If your boss happens to be an intimidator or a control freak, then the best way of dealing with their behavior is to remain calm and acknowledge their power by saying, “You’re right, I’m sorry.” By saying this, you take away any chance of them lashing back at you because you have sidestepped their verbal attack rather than meeting it head on. 3. Discuss rather than confront. When your boss criticizes you, dont react out of emotion and become confrontational with them about it because that just breeds more conflict. Instead, use their criticism as a topic for discussion on interests, goals, and problem-solving and ask them for their advice. If they criticize your work, then that means that they have their own idea on how that work should be done, so ask them for their advice on how your work can be improved. 4. Manage the manager. A source of conflict usually occurs when a group of employees gets a new manager who demands that things run differently. These changes are usually reactionary in nature because the employees go about their regular duties until the manager comes by and criticizes the way it is being done. Instead of waiting for their criticism, take a proactive approach and be absolutely clear from the very beginning on how your boss wants things to be done so that there is no miscommunication later on. There are many ways of completing a task and having a discussion about them at the very beginning will allow you to see things from their perspective as well as sharing your own with them. Get to know their likes and dislikes inside and out so that you can avoid future criticisms. 5. Know that you can do little to change them. Being a difficult person is part of their personality and therefore it is a very difficult, if not impossible thing to change in a supervisor, so dont think that you can change how they act. Instead, change the way that you view their behavior. Dont label them as being a jerk–just merely label them as your boss. By avoiding derogatory labeling, you avoid making it easy on yourself to be angry with your boss. 6. Keep your professional face on. Know the difference between not liking your boss and not being professional. You dont have to make your boss your friend or even like your boss as a person, but you do have to remain professional and get the job done and carry out their instructions dutifully as a subordinate, just as you would expect them to be professional as do their duties as a supervisor. 7. Evaluate your own performance. Before you go attacking your boss, examine your own performance and ask yourself if you are doing everything right. Get opinions from other coworkers about your performance and see if there is any warrant to the criticisms of your supervisor before you criticize their opinions. 8. Gather additional support. If others share in your concern, then you have the power of numbers behind you to give you additional persuasion power over your boss. It is often easy for a supervisor to ignore or attack one employee, but it becomes more difficult to attack all of his employees. He might be able to fire one of you, but he will look like an idiot (and probably get fired himself) if he tries to fire all of you. An interdepartment union is a good way of mustering power against an abusive employer. 9. Dont go to up the chain of command unless its a last resort. Going straight up the chain of command is not an effective way of dealing with a difficult supervisor because it only increases conflict in the workplace. Your immediate supervisor will consider this a very serious backstabbing maneuver and might seek some sort of retribution in the future against you and your career. Also, other people in your workplace might brand you as a whistleblower because of your actions. Try to discuss issues with your supervisor first and only go up the chain of command as a last resort. 10. Encourage good behavior with praise. It is easy to criticize your superiors, but criticisms often lead towards resentment and hostile feelings. Everyone likes a pat on the back for good behavior, so you should strive to watch for good behaviors from your supervisor and compliment them on that. Proactive praising is much more effective than reactive criticisms. 11. Document everything. If you choose to stay with a toxic employer, then document everything. This will become your main ammunition should a complaint ever be filed down the road. Document interactions with them as well as your own activities so that you can remind them of your own achievements at performance review time. 12. Leave work at work. Get into the habit of leaving work at home and not bringing it into your personal life because that will only add to your level of stress. Keep your professional life separate from your personal life as best as you can. This also includes having friends who you dont work with so that you can detach yourself from your work life rather than bringing it home with you. Dieting? What You Need to Know About Physical Activity

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Dr. Jamie Fettig What is the best form of physical activity? The best form of physical activity is what you will actually do often. That is it. What you will actually do. And the good news is, it can be something different every day. You can walk one day, run another, go swimming another, play Frisbee golf another, go golfing the next, rollerblade the next day, ride your bike another day, etc. You do not have to do the same thing every day. But you can if you want to. Some hints on what your inner knowing might say around physical activity: One day 30 minutes might be perfect for you, and the next day only 10 minutes is good. Other days an hour or two might be ideal. One day a slow relaxing pace might be ideal, the next a heavy vigorous workout might be called for. There are no rules about how and when you should or shouldnt do physical activity. My only guideline would be: Do what you want to do, and listen to your inner knowing when doing it. The lawyers would want me to tell you to consult a physician before starting any exercise program here. My thought is, your inner knowing knows better than any doctor does about what is best for you. If you listen to your inner knowing and act on what it says, who cares about the doctor? Listen to your inner knowing about how long and how intensely to work out. Dont be so concerned with getting 30 minutes in at X heart rate three times a week. Dont be concerned with lifting X pounds X times. Focus more on where you are at right now when you are doing physical activity, and do what is best for you right now. Walking outside is great. You can take deep full breaths of fresh air when you are walking, go within and focus on the God Presence within you. You will also get sunlight from being outside. You can do four of the seven things in one activity. Walking, (how easy is that?) is Great. Pilates is Great. Yoga is Great. Rollerblading is great. There are many forms of physical activity that are wonderful. Bottom line, just do some form of sustained physical activity. There is a bonus coming about the importance of mental activity. Take it easy and don’t exercise so hard. You can exercise too much and to hard. This idea and article are covered in my free e-course, on Dieting and Eating Healthy. Hot Kissing Tips for Guys

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Savanah Douglas There is something that goes without saying for the most part, but I am going to say it anyway. Most guys are nervous about the way they kiss. Sure they enjoy kissing and they certainly do it every chance we get, but there is always that little room for doubt as to whether the other party is enjoying it as much as we are. The reason is that men and women are different people as a whole. Sure there are exceptions, but for the most part women want to invoke an emotional response from the kisses that they receive, while the men tend to want to bring up a passionate response. Here are some things that women want when they kiss, by knowing these kissing tips for guys you will be able to dazzle your woman with your kisses. First, most women love to be tender. They seem to be more prone to feeling uncomfortable when it comes to things like kissing than men do. Now you need to keep in mind that I am speaking in generalities, of course there will always be exceptions to the rules. Especially when your senses are heightened, as in when you are kissing, the nerve endings tend to be a little more sensitive. If you are tender and soft when you kiss it will feel great, if you are a little too hard in the way that you press your lips or the way you embrace your partner then it will come across as being uncomfortable to your partner. The most important thing when kissing a girl is to meet them in the middle. Don’t expect them to come over to the passion side completely but don’t be afraid to give in to the emotional side. If you are really unsure about your abilities then why not ask about it? I’m sure that they will give you a candid response. Learn how to kiss, French kiss, and make every kiss from the first to the last hot and memorable. Top Ten Reasons to Start A Catering Business

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Detra Davis There is little doubt that Americans still have a deep abiding love for all things eatable. Despite the health craze that has forced Ronald McDonald to sport a jogging suit, Whoppers, Big Macs, and French Fries is truly why we have fat thighs. So whats the answer? We need great home-grown cooks who are not into the fast food obsession. Do you love to cook and suffer from severe withdrawal when denied the opportunity to prepare your famous spinach stuffed chicken breast served with broccoli and roasted garlic? Do you want to profit from the food you prepare in your kitchen? How often have you dreamed of a kitchen make-over where you were wearing a chef coat and torque? You may want to try your hand at starting a small catering business. You are destined for the catering field if your friends rave over your food and are willing to pay you to prepare their favorite dish. Can you answer yes to the following questions? 1. Have you ever worked in a grocery store or a restaurant? 2. Do live, breath and think about cooking food all the time? (Note, I did not say eat.) 3. Do you have a collection of what you would consider some of the most delectable recipes on the planet? 4. Do you take every opportunity to give friends and family food gifts? 5. Do you make every family meal a memorable one but paying close attention to every detail of the meal? 6. Do you love to cook for big crowds? 7. Do you dream of selling your food to the public? 8. Can you take stiff criticism? (Note, catering is tough business and you must have thick skin.) 9. Do you have access to a commercial kitchen/large kitchen? 10. Can you see yourself working as a caterer? If you answered yes to all of these questions you may well be on your way to a catering career. You may first want to contact a caterer in your community and spend a day with her. Ask if you can volunteer to work a catered event. If you want this and you are hungry, really hungry, you will do whatever it takes to make your dream a reality. Start small, ask lots of questions, get a mentor and perfect the fine skill of being totally organized. You could well be the next Paula Deen, of the Food Networks Paulas Home Cooking. She parlayed her southern delights into a catering business, and ultimately opened her own restaurant. Remember, nothing beats a failure, but a try. Detra D. “Centers of Influence” Make Generating More Clients Easier

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Connie Scholl First let’s define exactly what a “C.O.I.” is… A Center of Influence is a person you know of who interacts with a large number of people on a regular basis and is always willing to connect people they meet with others in their networks. (They’re often dubbed “Social Butterflies!”) Building a relationship with a C.O.I. will often lead to many new referrals without great effort or expense on your part. So, now that we’ve agreed that C.O.I. are a good thing, let’s talk about how to initiate solid business relationships with these folks (so that you can then spend less time marketing and more time doing the work you enjoy)! 1. Who Would be a Good C.O.I. for Your Business? In other words, who already has contacts with your target market–Financial Professionals, Mortgage Brokers, Insurance Representatives, Real Estate Agents? Think this through and create a list of those people that could help you grow your business. 2. What’s In It For Them? Keeping in mind that this is a two-way street, think about what resources, information, skills, clients or contacts you might have to offer. Come to the table armed with ideas and effectively communicate what you’d like them to do for you, as well as what you’re offering in return. 3. Where Can You Rub Elbows With a C.O.I.? First, do a bit of research and find out what type of groups they belong to–then regularly attend these functions yourself! 4. Who Already Knows the Person You Want to Meet? Six-Degrees of separation anyone? It really IS a small world. Your connection to just about anyone in the world is closer than you think. Think family, friends, networking contacts and existing clients here! 5. Always Have Something to Invite People To C.O.I. love to network and would be delighted if you were able to introduce THEM to new contacts, as well. 6. Communicate With Your C.O.I. Often Remember, the goal here is long-term relationship, not a one-night stand. You want to maintain a healthy business relationship to ensure leads and referrals continue to flow in on a consistent basis. For this to happen, you need to stay in touch with phone calls, meetings, notes, etc. 7. Don’t Forget to say “Thank You” Don’t take your referrals for granted. Take the time to acknowledge that lead or new client with an appropriate thank you gesture. Everyone LOVES to be appreciated and thanked! Lighten Your Skin The Fast And Easy Way

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By John Morris Everyone have the same quantity of melanocytes that are cells producing melanin. People with darker skin tone produce more melanin into the skin compared to those with fairer skin. Releasing melanin is the bodys reaction to exposure to the sun’s ultra violet rays. The use of sunscreen products helps protects the skin from the ultra violet rays of the sun, keeping melanin production at a minimum. 1. Skin Lightening Ingredients: Hydroquinone Hydroquinone is powerful in holding back the production of melanin, thus giving dark skin a lighter shade. It is not a skin bleach. When this product is exposed to the sun, it can turn into a strange shade of dark to medium brown, therefore, it is very important that when buying the product, it must be packed in an opaque container so light can not get in. It is also important that when using a hydroquinone product to use sunscreen as well. Tretinion Research show that tretinion is effective in the treatment of skin discolorations. However, it would usually take at least six months before results are seen. Thus, the use of tretinion solely is not advised for skin lightening rather it should be combined with other skin lightening treatments to give maximum results. Alpha Hydroxy Acids Alpha hydroxy acid products that come in concentrations of 4 to 10 percent are not successful in hindering melanin production as well as will not lighten the skin of discolorations. Yet on the other hand, there is substantial proof that when used in combination with other skin care medication such as hydroquinone, kojic acid and azelaic acid they can be very successful for improving and correcting the general appearance of damaged skin due to over exposure to the sun and assisting the other ingredients to effectively penetrate the skin. Arbutin Because of the arbutin’s high hydroquinone content it may have melanin-inhibiting properties, though researches done in explaining the arbutin’s eficiency is very convincing, as to how much of it is needed to effectively lighten the skin are yet to be established. In addition, arbutin is not widely used by the majority of cosmetic companies in their products for the reason that there are patents that limit the use of arbutin for skin lightening. Instead, certain cosmetics companies are using plant extracts that contain arbutin such as bearberry. Unluckily, there is no study showing that the bearberry plant source of arbutin has any influence on skin lightening. Kojic Acid Kojic acid is derived from the process of fermentation of malting rice, that is used in the making of sake, a Japanese rice wine. Research show that kojic acid is effective for stoping melanin production. Glycolic or kojic acid, or glycolic acid with hydroquinone, are extremely effective in decreasing pigmentation. Kojic acid is very unstable when used in cosmetic formulations. When exposed to sunlight or air, it may change to a darker color and loose its affectivity. Thus, most cosmetic companies now use kojic dipalmitate as alternative to kojic acid since it is much more stable in formulations. Still, there is no concrete study that shows kojic dipalmitate is as effective as kojic acid, even though it is an effective antioxidant. Vitamin C (L- Ascorbic Acid) Vitamin C as Ascorbyl form has been proven to inhibit melanin production, resulting in a brighter and lighter skin. In addition, Vitamin C plays a vital role in collagen synthesis, increasing collagen production in the skin as well as it regenerate Vitamin E, that suppresses free radicals. Azelaic Acid Azelaic acid is a component of certain grains like wheat, rye, and barley. When applied at a I20 percent of concentration, it is very effective in correcting certain skin conditions. Not only it is used for the treatment of acne, but studies also show that it is effective for skin lightening and discolorations. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate This form of vitamin C is stable and as it is an effective antioxidant, it also lightens the skin by inhibiting melanin production.
