Using Hydrogen Peroxide in Your Hydroponics Gardening System

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Jason Willkomm There are no doubts about the benefits of using hydrogen peroxide properly in a hydroponics system. This becomes especially true if your nutrient reservoir is kept above 72 degrees. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, and therefore encourages the growth of more viruses, fungi, and anaerobic bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide adds oxygen to you water and cleans the water of pathanogens. Benefits include healthier root systems, increased nutrient uptake, thicker stems, and bigger leaves. One expert claims it should be used on all soil gardens as well as in hydroponics sytems. Knowing as much as I do about beneficial fungus and micro-organisms and the benefits they provide to living plants, I am shy in taking this advice. However, when this first line of defense fails and plants become sick I often resort to using hydrogen peroxide treatments on my soil grown plants. The chemical formula of hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. You may notice it is simply water with an extra oxygen atom. In fact, as hydrogen peroxide breaks down in a solution the result is oxygen and water. Its application helps deliver oxygen to over watered plant roots and helps to sterilize the growing media by killing harmful anaerobic (not oxygen compatible) bacteria and pathanogens that cause disease. This includes bacterial wilt, pythium fungi, fusarium fungi, and others. I avoid using the common 3% hydrogen peroxide you normally find at drug stores. This is because such low percentage solutions are unstable, and chemicals are added to the peroxide to keep it from breaking down before it can be used. I did a little research because I did not know what chemicals were used for this, or if the plants uptake these chemicals, or if there was a health risk associated with any of these stabilizing chemicals. Hydrogen peroxide is usually stabilized with acetanilide. Acetanilide is a synthetic compound that was first used for its fever reduction and pain killing properties in the late Nineteenth Century. For many years it was utilized as an alternative to aspirin to treat various ailments, but large-scale medical use stopped when the toxic side effects of consuming acetanilide became apparent. This was enough to make up my mind to use 35% hydrogen peroxide instead. Firstly, 35% peroxide is caustic and should be treated with the same caution as a strong acid. 35% strength hydrogen peroxide should be readily available at any quality hydroponics supply shop. The stronger concentrations do not use the added stabilizers. The recommended dosage is to add 2-3 ml to each gallon of water, however, I use 5 ml per gallon and have never had any problems. At every nutrient change treat your fresh water with hydrogen peroxide. The general idea is to let the hydroponics sytem circulate the hydrogen peroxide solution for about a half hour to let the peroxide work against pathogens and to let the solution stabilize before adding your nutrients. The beneficial effects of using hydrogen peroxide last about 4 days. There are some gardeners who add a little peroxide to their nutrient reservoirs every 5 days in between nutrient changes. If you decide to do this, stick to the guidelines and always make sure your solution is thoroughly mixed before exposing your plants roots to it. Another option is to top off your nutrient reservoir with peroxide treated water whenever it is low. Baby’s Got Bling - You Can Package Anything

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By JoAnn Hines Recently I’ve seen a host of new product introductions and I wondered who is going to buy that? But there are products out there for everyone. After reviewing the items I got thinking these are great examples of the “Power Of The Package” you know packaging as the silent salesperson. After all its the packaging that going to sway you or not to consider purchasing these products. When I read about Bling H20, I initially thought what a great marketing ploy but then I realized that primary target demographics: boomers and women would be the ideal audience. These groups have money to spend and are willing to spend it for the right products. The luxury consumable market is also on the rise and product are being created to meet the demand. (Ask me about DIVA vodka) People are willing to invest in themselves with a little luxury spending so why not luxury bottle water. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this product Bling H20 ($35 a bottle) is no ordinary water. It comes in a thin, tall, frosted glass bottle and each 750ml bottle is handcrafted, corked, and decorated with exquisite Swarovski Crystals. Wow what a concept! I love Swarovski Crystals anyway. If you want to see a picture I’ll have it archived on my website shortly. Along with other products in the super luxury category comes this example. “ICE ROCKS are a secured ice cube product made from spring water for the luxury market.” But its more that just high priced ice cubes. It touches us in other ways that are important such as product purity and security. They even touch the environmental button too with eco-friendly containers. “The ice cubes are made for savvy consumers who seek the same level of purity for the ice cubes they place in their favorite beverages. These cubes, to be consumed within two (2) years, are hermetically packaged in disposable, eco-friendly containers, providing the user with a complete guarantee with regard to hygiene and safety, while respecting the environment.” Ready to buy some prepackaged ice? I had to finish with this one. Packaging Crap. Yes, you heard it you can package anything and sell it if you have the right marketing message in your product packaging. This is a direct quote “If the package looks pretty, people will buy just about anything. So says an advertising executive in New York, and he has proved his point by selling boxes of rubbish for the price of an expensive bottle of wine. Justin Gignac, 26, has offloaded almost 900 carefully presented plastic cubes of trash from the street of the Big Apple at between $50 (26) and $100 each. Buyers from 19 countries have paid for the souvenirs. The idea has been so successful that he is thinking of franchising it around the world.” Yikes buying crap, my husband would love that one. He thinks all my packaging “examples” are crap too so maybe I should put them on Ebay. But to recap why and how packaging works as a sales tool. It sends a message to the consumer. Its up to you the product manufacturer to determine what that message will be and who the audience is. But whomever the demographic the package has an important role to play and its integral to building your brand. So what constitutes compelling packaging brand? How “connected” are you to your consumer? Here are a few emotion descriptors that your package must convey. Does your packaging Engage, Evoke, and Engross the consumer? Lets look first at ENGAGE: to attract and hold by influence or power. Can you say that about your product packaging? Or is your product packaging just the opposite? Boring!Got any BLING in it? Think about what you can do to improve the odds that your package will engage a consumer: Colors, features, shapes, value and benefits are all ways to reach out with your package. Swarovski Crystals? EVOKE: To call forth or call up as in evoking memories. What about your package will make the consumer recall a successful or enjoyable product experience? How can you make them remember that they were satisfied in buying your product? In case they haven’t purchased before, what is going to “connect” them to your product on your package? What is so special about your package that they have to take a closer look? ENGROSS: To engage the whole attention of (and that’s the key point). You have to get their attention to pick up our product before they can even consider buying it. Use features that will capture their interest in seconds because that’s all the time you are going to get before they move on. Another “feeling” word that conveys a strong and compelling brand is TRUST. You must create a place where people look for information and feel more secure doing so. It’s important to understand the strength behind the brand and why people turn to it for a sense of security and information. So what about your product packaging conveys the experience that consumers can trust your brand? ICE ROCKS anyone? Regardless of the reason a consumer may be in the store or looking at your product, introduce them to a “lifestyle” experience . . . trust, security, necessity or even peace of mind. Your package presence needs to call out “Buy Me” because I provide the experience of all of the above emotions. Product branding is a powerful influence on everyone. Its important to understand the strength behind the brand and why people turn to it for a sense of happiness, satisfaction, security and information. The best of all brands cross gender, ethnicity and age demographics. That is to say that everyone will recognize and identify with the brand. When you capture the power of the package people will integrate your product into their everyday life. They will not just turn to it as a convenience but as a necessity for comfortable living. So create your own story through powerful product packaging. Whatever your category, you should strive to engage, evoke, and engross the consumer to revitalize your brand through product packaging. Just remember when you have BLING, You Can Package Anything. Don’t wait until its too late. Make packaging your first thought–not your last. I get hundreds of inquiries a month asking how to package products. Most of the time, they are in crisis mode because they did not think about the package until crunch time. I just got a call from an entrepreneur whose packaging was a disaster. She never thought about the role packaging plays in her products success until her retailer said “NO WAY” to her product packaging. She had to start over. As a result, she lost a great deal of money in the process. To help others learn that lesson before it is too late, I have come up with a basic workshop offering education on packaging products to sell. Whether you are an entrepreneur, inventor, work from home mom, or a small business person with an idea or product it is imperative to understand the role packaging plays in a successful product launch. Packaging 101it is simple and offers the basics of what you need to know. The “Nuts and Bolts” of how product packaging works and “How To” of packaging. Encouragement

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Katheryn Hoban Everyone needs encouragement. So many people in this world feel discouraged, pressed in, cornered, unworthy, unlovable, or completely overwhelmed by the circumstances of their lives. You can make a difference in one moment if you will honestly and sincerely encourage them. Let them know that they are capable, that they can do the task before them. Adults, children and senior citizens all needto be encouraged. One way to do this is to talk with them, give them a clear picture of how you see them doing something well. Give them your vision when they dont have their own. Be gentle. Encourage one moment and empathize the next. Let them talk about their dreams and how they used to be or in moments when they felt strong. Sometimes it is necessary to be firm or decisive about the positive picture that you hold of them. Dont waver in your thoughts, be sure that they will be able to do what they want and do it well. Encourage them to do it one step at a time. Praise these little accomplishments. Encourage them to something a little more challenging. Keep recalling that vision of strength for them. Encourage the positive in them; dont let them have a self-pity party. People may not know what they want to do, and it is not your job to tell them what they should do. But you can encourage them towards what they like to do,what makes them joyful, what makes them feel strong and empowered. You can encourage them to make choices that feel better for them. You can encourage anyone exactly where you are. If you are in school, or if you are working, find the positive right there. Sometimes a smile is all it takes. If they are feeling down, a hug can do wonders to make someone feel worthy or lovable. You can encourage with your words and your thoughts, by listening, by being a sounding board, by leading them with your own actions or way of being. When you need to be encouraged, come to me, or go to another person who can offer encouragement to you. Dont go to anyone whom you know will condemn your actions or judge you. Go to the people with vision and strength of their own who are making some positive impact. Every creature on this planet can be and needs to be encouraged at one time or another. Be that person who encourages others. Encourage with kindness, with love, by examples, with praise, with your words. It is as simple as saying You can do this. To encourage is one of the greatest things that you can do for someone. This doesnt mean that you do their work for them. For anyone to become everything for which they are capable they have to do it. They have the opportunity to embrace a new choice, a new way of being, and they have to walk through it. You can be with them every step of the way. You can uplift and strengthen by your words of encouragement. Also remember to encourage yourself. I know you can do this. Come on now, you can do this. One step out is all it takes to transform a situation, or yourself. Step after step consistently will bring you into a new place. Only you or I can take that first step, and the second and the third. Sometimes you are the only person with words of encouragement for someone who is doing something outstanding or great. Great teachers or mentors need encouragement too; they can doubt themselves sometimes. They wonder if they aremaking the difference, or if they are doing enough. Its not easy being the odd man out or to stand up and have convictions about something when everyone else is going along with the crowd. If you dont have any words to say, a touch on the arm or shoulder, a pat on the back, a smile, or a spontaneous gift can go a long way. Find ways to encourage someone. Do so sincerely. Receive encouragement yourself. Be open to moments when you can impact someones life in a positive and gentle manner, or a profound way. I encourage you, my daughter, to embrace your life, and reach every height that you can! YOU CAN DO IT!! Yoga Kat–aka Katheryn Hoban is a yoga teacher with twelve years experience. Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Lance Winslow Hawaiian Banana growing better than expected and banana farmers produced 30 percent more bananas in 2005 then in 2004 and that is almost 4.5 million pounds more. Why are bananas growing so well in Hawaii? Great weather is one reason. The sales of bananas were up by 8 million in revenues and this year is looking good too? Well guess who benefits in all this? Well it is you as a consumer meaning more plentiful bananas in the United States and that means healthier and happier people. Bananas are rich in nutrition and provide the body with many of the things we need to stay fit and healthy. This is a very good thing and even better is that they had a 30% yet the United States Department of Agriculture tells us that they grew them on less acres. Better weather provided better yields. Hawaii is a huge producer of bananas for the United States and these are some of the best bananas in the World too. Perhaps you may have noticed at some of your favorite eating establishments more banana dishes on the menu. Even Starbucks has Banana Crme Frappachinos and Banana Chocolate Chip Crme Cake and Banana Nut Muffins. You see how the price of bananas changes the world around us? After all doesnt it seem everyone has just been going bananas lately? Consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Organizing Your Scrapbook Space to Help Your at Home Scrapbooking Business

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Colleen Shiach There are an endless number of tools and supplies that help us turn plain pages into works of art for our customers. But organizing and storing all those wonderful embellishments we use to create with can be challenging. Spending time digging through drawers and boxes looking for supplies is frustrating and time consuming and time is money. There are simple and inexpensive ways to help you spend less time searching for your supplies and more time exactly creating. Sorting supplies by categories or themes is very useful and you can tell at a glance what you have in stock. Some useful categories are Winter, Christmas, Easter, Valentines, Baby girl, Baby boy, etc. Create interesting labels using 2x 4 address labels and your computer. You can have fun with this too by adding small graphics and matching the font to your business cards. Be sure to save all those scrap pieces of paper into themes also. A great item for this are those accordion style keepers available at most office supply stores and 12x 12 Paper Envelopes by Cropper Hopper. By saving all those scraps of paper you can use them to make die cuts and punches to match those wonderful pages you are creating. What to do with all those fibers and ribbons ? Place fibers in small plastic bags and store them in your theme containers. Smaller plastic containers work great to store fibers by colors. You can also use recycled clear jars, cleaned and labels removed, and sort by color. Add your creative labels to these also. Photo boxes are a great size for holding spools of ribbon and these come in clear. Another great solution is to hang a small pretty curtain rod on your wall and thread those ribbon spools on the curtain rod. Paper is one of the most important staples and storage is also a major problem for most at home scrapbooking businesses. Paper comes in hundreds of different colors, patterns, textures and weights. It needs to be kept dry and clean, be photo safe and stored in plain sight. Paper can be stored in a wide variety of ways but horizontal is the best. There are lots of wonderful products out there, from wire storage racks to clear stacking plastic trays and are a very good investments. Colleen Shiach had been scrapbooking on and off for 10 years when she decided to start her own company in 2004. Colleen now owns and operates Colleens Memory Albums, a scrapbook for hire service that carries pre made scrapbook pages and albums, scrapbook supplies, tear bears and handmade embellishments. Outdoor Furniture: Exploring the Benefits of Teak

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Mike Spencer Of the many types of materials that are available for the construction of outdoor furniture, teak is often overlooked. This beautiful wood of tropical origin adds character and elegance to your outdoor design through a blending of nature and man-made elements which provide an outstanding aesthetic presentation to any yard. Teak (technically known as tectona grandis) has been proven to be the best wood for use in the great outdoors. As a result of its high rubber content, this wood has a natural resistance to heat, water and frost without the benefit of any treatment or special coating. In addition, its natural properties render it termite resistant due to the high content of oil that it possesses. The durability of teak is another benefit that makes it very popular with consumers, as well as the way in which it wears. Over time, weathering causes the teak to develop a silvery gray patina that heightens its beauty without compromising its integrity. Though it may be higher in price than other types of construction, teak can be considered an investment, since its durability will provide you with many years of classic comfort and design. Due to its unique ability prevent the build-up of rust and corrosion when brought into contact with metal, teak can be used in combination with a variety of metals to provide a stylish alternative to an all-wood appearance, while protecting the integrity of the entire structure through its unusual properties. This is, in fact, one of the reasons that teak has been so popular since ancient times and has been utilized in the construction of ships. The bottom line is that, when teak is introduced into the scenario, the result is a strong product that doesnt suffer the downfalls of most pieces of furniture and all within a pretty package. Regardless of the season, teak furniture can safely be left outdoors without diminishing its durability or presentation, and is easy to care for with a bit of warm soapy water and a scrub brush. For those who prefer to use a pressure washer, be sure to keep the pressure low and use a flat jet for the best results. This should be done twice each year, in order to clean and preserve the teak. Outdoor dining sets for porches and patios, chaise lounges, chairs, benches, tables and a variety of accessories can be used to design a comfortable, yet attractive, outdoor lawn grouping for everyday use or entertaining. Since teak furniture is available in a variety of styles and is weather resistant its ideal for any type of climate, from the heat of the southwest to the ever-changing seasonal conditions of New England. As a result of its natural properties, diversity and beauty, teak can be integrated into a wide variety of items today, and is a popular furniture choice for English Garden settings. Found in private homes, hotels, lodges, resorts and luxury watercraft, teak is synonymous with elegance and is one of the best furniture investments that a homeowner can make when furnishing the outdoor area of the home. Mike has been involved with exterior landscaping for several years, having first got the bug when he landscaped his own back garden. Wedding Limousine Services: Tips that won’t Frustrate you

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Earl Juanico On a very special occasion as a wedding day, one would want more than a mere limo ride to the church. Wedding limousine ride is ought to be an unforgettable and pleasurable experience that is fitting to an event of such great importance. Rest assured one would not only want the limousine to show up on time but also to show up in perfect condition. Who would want to sit down, in a beautiful wedding gown, where liquor was spilled the night before? So how does one make sure that the wedding limousine service chosen will abide expectations? The simple underlying principle that answers this question is that prior research can do a great deal in preventing frustration. First things are first. One should reserve a wedding limousine at least six months prior to the big event. Do not put cheapest price at utmost priority when inquiring about prices, because the level of service corresponds to what is paid for. To assure that the service is really worth its price, ask to have a look at the companys fleet of wedding limousines before making a decision. A vehicle that is well maintained is free of blemishes, foul odorsa vehicle one will be proud to be seen in. When reserving a time slot for a wedding limousine, also make an allowance for the estimate time it takes for a photographer to take the list of requested pictures after the ceremony. Limousine companies normally book vehicles based on the time frame that clients reserve. For example, if one reserves a limousine from 2-5 P.M. and at 5 P.M. the photographer is still taking pictures, the worst thing that could happen is coming out of the church expecting to embark on a limousine on the way to the reception only to realized that it had gone because it had another appointment scheduled at 6 P.M. Fortunately, going over the allotted time can simply be an additional charge for the extra hour. But this is something that one must confirm while making the reservation. Another important aspect to consider when renting a wedding limousine is the chauffeur. The chauffeur should be appropriately dressed for the occasion. A recommended limousine company would employ chauffeurs that meet ones every need. It is usual to tip a chauffeur 20% of the limousine fee. Last tip that wont frustrate anyone is with regards to the limousine itself. Besides being presentable and clean, one should confirm whether the limousine company provides anything inside the limousine such as soft drinks or bottled water. In line with this, it is beneficial to ask if the company provides a bottle of champagne upon request. One should check out extra services such as this because this feature could very well prove as a deciding factor to choose one limousine company over the other. A final piece of advice is for those couples who plan a wedding schedule within the last weekend in April up to the first weekend in June. This particular period is prom season and most limousine companies will allow for limousine renting beyond 5 P.M. in the evening for a wedding. So if the wedding is set to push through on this period of year, one can schedule the wedding ceremony early in the day, because this is a very effective way one can get the limousine of choice for such a special day. A limousine may really be a minor part of the wedding, but with a well-guided choice, the whole wedding experience will remain a great memory for life. Looking for a Quick Financial Fix? Get a Fast Cash Payday Loan Now!

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dave_Poon]Dave Poon Do you experience that time of the month where, no matter how you try to stretch your money to last you until your next paycheck, you just cannot seem to do so? There are often financial emergencies or miscellaneous expenses which come up that are not included in your monthly list of things to buy. Thus, you are forced to look for a short term loan or borrow some money from a friend in order to tide you over until the next payday. This is a fairly common scenario, especially if you are living from paycheck to paycheck. If you often find yourself in a financial bind, do not worry because the answer is just a payday away. ‘Fast Cash Payday Loans’ The answer to your temporary cash shortage is an advanced payday loan. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways for you to get a hold of some money before your next paycheck is out. You might find that your electric bill suddenly soared for the month because you just bought a new laptop and you constantly use it. 2. You might have forgotten that your best friend is celebrating his or her birthday and you unthinkingly volunteered to sponsor a surprise birthday party. 3. You suddenly see an item on sale that you just have been wanting to buy for months. 4. You might need to give a friend or a relative a loan, because of a medical or financial emergency. A fast cash payday loan is the answer to a temporary cash shortage. The repayment of the loan, along with the applicable charges and interests, are also processed through an electronic bank transfer. Appropriate interests and other specific terms regarding the loan period will apply, depending on the lending company. There are even lending companies which will provide you with a fast cash payday loan by simply filling up an online form. Using Business Blogs: Ideal for Marketing Conferences, Seminars and Product Launches

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By M White Using a Business Blog as the central Public Relations tool for an Event you are hosting really adds weight to the profile it can achieve. It also provides the perfect focal point for the other marketing and promotional activities being used to develop it. The Event might be a conference, a seminar (or a series of seminars), an exhibition, a trade show or a product launch, but the requirements remain the same: you are looking to attract as many people as possible and be able to distribute information about it to as wide an audience as possible. Only when people know about the Event and can get information on it can they choose to attend! So, what makes a Business Blog such an indispensable tool for anyone organising an event, whether it is of general interest or internal to your company? Some of the key elements are:Blogs are ideal vehicles to generate Search Engine attention and hence spread information to a wider audienceThe marketing department can add information without bringing in IT departments or web designers, so making updates easy and immediateInformation remains always up to date and is permanently accessible: no need to send out hundreds of follow ups because people have lost part what they have been sentCommunications with attendees is simplified either using RSS or email by referring people to the information contained in the blog rather than sending it to everyoneIt provides a central point for all information which both online and offline marketing for the event can then focus in onInstant feedback can be obtained from attendees to give valuable information for future events There are several phases during the event where the blog lends extra value to the event and a valuable source of information and feedback for the attendees. These range from when the Event is announced through to the post-Event distribution of information, as well as the ongoing publicity generated for the company and any subsequent events. 1. Announcing the eventThe initial information will launch the process, outlining the Event’s format, its content (or expected content), its aims and who it will benefit from it. By including the framework of the event, you give the initial key information, start the work on the Search Engines visibility and give yourself the basis of future development of the Blog. 2. Additions and updates to agendaThe Blog format provides the perfect means of keeping the agenda up to date, no matter how many changes are made to it. It is likely that the conference agenda and the speakers will not be finalised before the event is initially announced but, because updating a blog needs no technical input, it can be done easily and quickly by those running the Event. Updates are then instantly available and attendees can be kept up to date using RSS or email. 3. Pre-Conference PromotionBy providing updates on the content of the event, you can continue to drive the publicity machine through your general marketing activities and through the Search Engines. Articles on the subjects the event will cover or information from the speakers, for example, will bring people back to your Blog and get further Search Engine coverage. 4. Commentary during the EventCommentary can come from two sources during the event: from the organisers as they add details about the presentations and keep information on the event up to date; and, importantly, also from the attendees themselves who can contribute their own thoughts and impressions about the event. These can be incorporated immediately and therefore be displayed while the event is still ongoing. 5. Event surveyOften surveys are run during targeted events to get feedback on aspects of its set-up and organisation, including content of the presentations and the speakers. The survey can easily be run through the blog and then of course the results can be posted there (and distributed by RSS) or emailed out. 6. Distributing downloadsPresentations will often be made available for download after the event. The Blog is the ideal place to post this information and, because of the focus on it before and during the event, it will also be the natural place for attendees to return to in order to retrieve it. 7. Post-Event appraisalAfter an event, the feedback and comments from the attendees using the Blog will form a major part of assessing its success. This, together with the event survey, will form the basis of the internal “post mortem” on how the event went and possible developments for the future. 8. Ongoing permanent archiveOf course, after the event, all of the content that you have created remains indexed by the Search Engines, giving a significant boost to your business profile and, for future events, a large amount of free promotion. If you wish to remove it, you can, but the benefits of leaving it and letting people access it will be much more useful. Business Blogs can be used in many different ways to enhance marketing and Public Relations activities, promote stronger customer relationships and develop your reputation online. By using Blogs as part of your marketing of Events, you are combining these 3 important aspects by providing better resources for your customers, promoting your Event to the widest possible audience and, by doing so, showing that your company is firmly ahead of the game. “Emarketing” Mark White is an emarketing consultant and business blogging specialist working primarily with companies in the UK.
