Spice It Up with Salsa

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Eric Vinje People have been spicing up their meals with salsa for hundreds of years. In fact, salsa, the condiment, not the dance, has been around for centuries and can be traced back to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas of present-day Mexico. In the United States, salsa, which means “sauce” in Spanish, has outsold ketchup since the 1990’s. And there are just as many variations of salsa, if not more, as there are ways to make a good spaghetti sauce. For example, most American salsas contain tomato. But the tomato in a homemade salsa can be fresh and raw, cooked or even tomato paste. It’s up to the maker. (Originally salsas from Mexico didn’t contain tomatoes and mainly used chiles, tomatillos and ricado, a blend of spices.) Although hot peppers predominate, salsas can also be spiced up with ingredients such as cilantro, cumin and oregano. Some folks even add garlic to their salsas. Beans are another healthy variation to the salsa mix. Black beans tend to be the bean of choice for salsa makers because of their texture and taste. They are low in fat and also contain protein and fiber. A final advantage to beans: they “mellow out” the heat from the peppers added to salsas, particularly hotter chile peppers such as habanero, serrano or even jalapeno. Sweet salsa ingredients can include mango, passion fruit, papaya, raspberries, as well as lemon, lime, orange and chiles. Some people add plantains or even nuts. Pretty much any fresh sauce can be a salsa. The major traditional types of salsa include: salsa cruda, picante, salsa fresca, salsa rojo and salsa verde. Salsa cruda means uncooked and is made from finely chopped uncooked ingredients such as raw tomato, hot chiles, peppers, onion and cilantro. Picante means “hot and spicy,” and is usually just a thinner sauce than your typical salsa cruda. Salsa fresca means “fresh sauce” and is your typical American salsa. It’s usually a mixture of chopped tomatoes, chiles and onions. Salsa rojo literally means “red sauce” and its foundation is the tomato. Salsa verde means “green sauce” and it is typically made from tomatillos, which are green. (For the record, tomatillo is not a tomato, in spite of its name, but instead is a reportedly a relative of the gooseberry. It is a tart, green fruit with a papery husk. It resembles a green, unripe tomato in appearance.) Our offerings at Cosmic Chile show how many different kinds of salsa exist. Offerings range from a traditional salsa like Jose Goldstein’s XXX Garlic, made out of habanero peppers and plenty of fresh garlic, to something more exotic like Thai Jungle Salsa, which contains three types of thai chiles, lemon and soy sauce. Salsa is not only fun, it’s healthy. Their major ingredients are vegetables which are low in calories, rich in vitamins and are low fat. They are simple to prepare and an easy way to dress up grilled chicken, fish, meat or pork for a quick meal during the week. Salsa is also a great snack when paired with chips. So next time you run out of something to have for a quick, but fun dinner during the week, try adding a little salsa to your entree. This article was written by Eric Vinje of Cosmic Chile. ‘A Rainbow Reminder’ series Article … Earth-Angel Update “Rascal’s Violet St. Martin Story”

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Russ Miles Hi Earth~Angel :) After spending hours writing an update similar to this, I went to check out the spelling of a word and lost all that I had written. It must be that I’d left something out so I will gladly rewrite what you are now reading…LOL… But first, I need another late night mocha… O.K. This is a story that needs to be told. It involves a precious lady who was in her eighties when she crossed over to assume her latest angelic, “Forever”, or afterlife form. Her widowed earth name was Violet St.Martin. I met her a few years ago, as she was finishing her testimony at a Full Gospel Businessman Fellowship, International weekly lunch meeting, which was held at a Denny’s in Vancouver. No longer the president of that chapter, I was running late and missed her part about having died. LOL. Afterward, while many people waited in line to buy her books, I was talking to another businessman about my Bible study when Violet overheard me say it was in Washougal. She told the people waiting that she would be right back and came to ask me if she might attend. She also asked if I might pick her up, as she no longer drove a vehicle by which to attend. My Bible studies were on Tuesdays, so the following morning, I picked Violet up. Once home, she made it up the front steps into my front door faster than I could as already I had a severe limp, the first signs of my developing MS. She was introducing herself to the other attendees by the time I got into the living room where I hosted the studies that were taught by a marvelous ‘Gifted” former Lutheran, minister and his wife who often drove for hours to teach an enlightening, one hour long study to the small group in my home. Somehow, in their well worn, aging station wagon, they always made it…LOL The few dollars contributed to their ministry by our hand-full of attendees rarely paid for the minister’s gas. Violet seemed to enjoy our Bible study with the prayers for participants following. We were making small talk after it concluded when Violet mentioned that after she had died when she was sixty some years old that it had taken her body a long time to recover. That was the 1st that I heard of her having been raised from the dead…LOL “You died?” I asked. “Oh,” Violet said. “You haven’t read my books?” “No,” I confessed. “But, I’ll be glad to buy them when I take you home. I didn’t get a chance, yesterday,” I lied… “Alright,” said Violet, letting me off of my own, unnecessarily created, hook. Yet, somehow I knew that she knew better. I also wondered why I had felt that I had to justify why I hadn’t purchased Violet’s books. “So, what do you remember about being dead, Violet?” I asked the question somewhat loudly in an overt attempt to draw some of the others into the conversation. They were busy leaving and none bothered to take notice. Violet smiled, knowingly. “Nothing,” she answered softly. “I was dead.” I blink my eyes. I felt like I had been setup. “So, what happened?” I asked, my respect for this, not so feeble old lady growing by the moment. “How long were you dead?” “Three days,” she replied. Then, without further prompting, Violet began sharing her story. “I had gone to visit a friend,” she said. “All that I remember is having the heart attack. My friend called 911! When the paramedics arrived, I was already gone. My friend later told me that they had had administered CPR, even attempting to restart my heart with the paddles, to no avail.” “WOW!” My involuntary response gushed forth. Unimpressed, Violet continued. “The ambulance took me into Vancouver to Providence Hospital, they call it Southwest Washington Medical Center now, where a doctor confirmed that I was indeed beyond any hope. He pronounced me dead. The hospital personal transferred me to the part where they keep the bodies until they are removed.” “The medical examiner to find out how you died?” I asked. “I don’t think so,” violet answered. “It was pretty obvious what my cause of death was, a massive heart attack, which is not unusual for a widow in her sixties. It’s in the same part of the facility, I think though?” I nodded my head in appreciation of how thoughtful Violet was to clearly answer my naive, unnecessary question, without so much as a hint of an attempt to make me feel dumb. I did anyway, as she continued with her story. “Well, Providence Hospital attempting to notify next of kin learned my only surviving relative was my daughter, in Alaska. They asked her where she would like my body transferred. Being rattled, my daughter told the lady that she would ‘be on the next flight down to Portland, Oregon, come across the Columbia River to Vancouver, Washington, find out where my minister would suggest, and be there right away. But, it took my daughter three days to get here, find my minister, and have him accompany her to the hospital. She was feeling guilty for not having been down to see me for quite some time, I believe. “All of that time, my body was on a slide-out shelf in the hospital cold storage. When the attendant pulled out the remains for positive identification, the minister said a little prayer, and that’s when I opened my eyes. It caused no little stir at the hospital,” Violet said with a chuckle. “They were not amused.” I laughed, imagining the scene as Violet explained that she had to remain in the hospital for some days before she could be released due to the ill effects of the cold. “The hospital attempted to explain how this could have happened, unwilling to accept how I was ‘Raised from the dead,’ just like Jesus, and Lazarus, who Jesus, after fours days his tomb, brought back to life too. Not everyone that God has raised from the dead was Christian. In the Old Testament, the people involved were Jews. Other religions and traditions have documented followers returning to life as well. It’s not as important that, of the maybe millions of names, a person knows Him by, God is still God and it’s Him who does the raising,” Violet said. As her eyes twinkled, her wrinkled lips parted to allow a little laugh to slip out. I had realized by then, that this precious old lady was anything but feeble minded. I had to ask, “Doesn’t the Bible say that there is only ‘One name by which we must be saved’?” I asked, ” That ‘Name’ being Jesus?” “Yes, but the scripture is so often misunderstood. You are talking about salvation the easy way for those of us who are Christians. God has always made it possible for His own people to be saved. The person must know that God IS, and believe that He is a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him,” Violet said with a knowing smile. “I enjoyed your study today and the minister’s prayers for us,” she concluded, rising to have me take her home. I only picked Violet up for a couple of more Bible studies before I learned that she had died. At the funeral home, the young man who took me to see her closed Casket had not heard of Violet’s former death experience. He left me alone in the room. I said a brief prayer of thanks for having had a chance to meet Violet, and I wished that I had taken more time to get to know her better. In my mind I heard, “The life of every living creature is in its blood.” Upon arriving home, I found where I’d read that. It is (CEV) Leviticus 17:14. The scripture went on, yet this was the part that was relevant. Violet had been embalmed. I knew that neither the real she nor her blood were in that now lifeless body. Violet had become a minister after being raised from her first death. She had moved to Canada for several years to serve a tribe of Native American Indian after that. Her most prized possessions in her small mobile home were some pictures taken by someone that showed “Angels” around her when developed. This earth mission complete, her Lord had called Violet home. I knew that I would see her again one day. I have more that I want to post. Yet, The Lord has reminded me that I have neither checked my emails nor IM’s for two days. I’ve been out running around meeting people, and experiencing more miracles first hand since being cured of MS only this week. LOL. I was instructed to add Violet’s story in this manner as an encouragement to Earth Angels who, if you haven’t already been, will be called crazy, deceived, and self deluded once accepting a role within His ‘A Rainbow Reminder’ Earth mission. Once more, I am reminded to say, “God never makes one of us ‘Do’ anything. He always allows us to ‘Choose’ if we will accept His assignments.” Furthermore, He’s instructed me to publish this update as an ezine article after posting it to this Earth Angels section of my MilesBooks.com website. Perhaps, I’ll post more upon return later tonight? Feelings: How to Help the Man You Love Learn to Express His Feelings

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Kari Joys Women often complain that their husbands or relationship partners never express their feelings. Often they get angry thinking that their partners don’t have feelings and don’t really care. In my work as a psychotherapist, I help men learn how to express their feelings every day so I know from many years of experience that men do have feelings and that they can definitely learn to express them. Since we’re learning that healthy relationships require that men and women learn to discuss their feelings with each other, I believe that we, as women, need to help our partners overcome the old programming that says real men don’t show their feelings. I’ve put together some tools you can use if you want to help your partner learn how to show you more of what’s really in his heart: 1. Feelings: Remember that your partner does have feelings even if he doesn’t know how to express them. He’s just been trained and programmed not to show them. Show him what a healthy relationship is by talking about your feelings without attacking him. 2. Feelings: Show him that you love him and that you’re on his side every day. You can do this in lots of little ways, like hugging him hello and goodbye, complimenting him everyday about something you value or appreciate about your relationship and by doing little things to show him you care. 3. Feelings: Ask him open-ended questions and listen without interrupting. If he starts to talk and you interrupt him or make him wrong in some way, he’ll probably shut you out and go into his cave. Healthy relationships require both that both partners really listen to each other. 4. Feelings: Paraphrase back to him what you heard him say with feeling words. For example “When you talk about your job, you sound frustrated and overwhelmed.” Then let him tell you whether you heard him accurately or not. Paraphrasing what your partner says will benefit your relationship because it helps you both to slow down and really understand each other. 5. Feelings: When you have feelings you want to share with him, use the formula, “When you… I feel… because I need… and I’d appreciate…”a. “When you” is completely non-judgmental, and non-evaluative.b. “I feel” is a message about yourself and your personal feelings, like “I’m scared” or “I’m hurt.”c. “Because I need” is a universal need, not “I need you to change.” It’s what anyone would need in that situation, like “I need compassion,” or “I need understanding” or “I need support.”d. “I’d appreciate” is a specific, do-able request, like “I’d appreciate if you would call and let me know if you’re going to be later than we planned.” Utilizing these simple steps will help you learn to discuss difficult relationship issues without attacking each other. 6. Feelings: Treat everything your partner shares with you as sacred ground! Never, ever use his feelings against him when you’re angry. Your relationship could be permanently damaged by using your partner’s feelings against him! 7. Feelings: Always thank him for trusting you–even if you’ve known him for 30 years! Letting him know how much you appreciate it makes him want to try again next time. Your relationship will be so much better and stronger when you can discuss your feelings with each other in healthy ways! 2006 Kari Joys It’s never too late to learn how to deal with your feelings in healthy ways! Ohio Mosque Promotes Murder!

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By David Ben-Ariel One day - I’ll never forget it - my former “Palestinian” student-neighbors purposely showed me a newsletter from the Islamic Center in Perrysburg, Ohio that had a story from the Haddith - sayings attributed to Mohammad - that spoke of a war in the last days between Jews and Muslims, and how Jews would hide behind trees and the trees would say, “There’s a Jew behind me, kill him!” except for one tree that would shelter the Jews. The next month the singles’ club from the Worldwide Church of God went to the mosque for a dinner-tour, followed by a question and answer session with the Egyptian imam/religious leader (who has since died and was praised as one who supposedly sought peace between different religions). I repeated the “spiritual lesson” to the imam and asked him if the Muslims had any such saying. He replied that the Jews create such spurious sayings in order to discredit Islam and Arabs. I then shocked him, and the audience, when I asked: “If that’s not a Muslim story, and is spurious and created by the Jews, then why would you, as the leader of this Islamic community permit that very story to be published in your newsletter last month?” He was speechless. So I know, firsthand, how many people can profess that their religion is “peaceful” to a naive Western audience and whistle a totally different tune to their own masses. I’ve also lived in predominately Arab East Jerusalem, just outside the Damascus Gate, working for my great American-Israeli Jewish manager under our millionnaire Muslim boss (who was exceptionally gracious). I know from a grassroots level what a farce the lying “peace” process is, and how such a false peace is based upon lies and delusions and is destined to crash and burn. All this is not popular to say, nevertheless it is the plain truth. Time will surely reveal that peace is possible between Israel and Ishmael, Christians, Jews and Muslims - as the Jerusalem-based Root & Branch Islam-Israel Fellowship proves - but it must be based upon the Bible and reality, not upon lying visions of false prophets pushing an empty peace. David Ben-Ariel, a Christian-Zionist writer and author of Beyond Babylon: Europe’s Rise and Fall, shares a special focus on the Middle East and great interest in Jerusalem, reflected in hard-hitting articles that help others improve their understanding of that troubled region. Creative Scrapbook Ideas

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Dee Marie Are you in need of a bit of a “pick me up” when it comes to scrapbooking ideas? If so, take heart. There are many ways to incorporate traditional methods in new ways as well as ideas to branch out and try something new. The following ideas can help spark new ideas or point you in a new direction. Quote It - You love the photos, but feel intimidated by the idea of adding journal entries to help you remember. One way to get around this is to use different entry techniques. For example, when scrapbooking a favorite event, consider using quotes from the event rather than simply stating what it was. A tour guide may have provided an unusual piece of history, or a child may have piped up with something funny. Making note of the things people say adds a unique dimension to your memories. Scrapbooks of Unusual Size - Consider going smaller or larger than the traditional scrapbook. You can make your own minis or find plenty to choose from that are specifically designed for this purpose. Oversized scrapbooks can be a fun alternative as well, creating an air of fine art that deserves special recognition. You can make your own, using specialty papers and card stocks, and include as many or as few pages as you’re inclined. Multicultural - Tired of the same old themes? Look to other cultures and works of art for inspiration. This obviously works well for travel and vacation scrapbooks, but you can gather ideas from these sources as well. Visit the library and browse art and travel books highlighting culture from around the globe. You’ll likely walk away with some good ideas. Turn to Nature - Remember pressing flowers or making an imprint of leaves? These same themes can easily be incorporated into your scrapbooking projects. Making an imprint is quick and easy, but you can also press flowers or use leaves with a quick and easy self-stick laminating kit. It’s quick, easy, and adds some outdoor flair to your project. University Research Projects and Case Studies of the Franchising Model

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Lance Winslow It seems there is always a business college somewhere putting out industry data research. These research projects give the kids something to do and learn as they practice studying this industry or that. Often one political group or another to illustrate a point or in an attempt prove their side of an argument about a particular industry uses these reports. Sometimes governments, political groups or the industry, fund these projects themselves. Those who use such research or figures should immediately be called into question, as we all know figures lie and liars figure. But are all these kids really lying? No, generally they are doing the best they can with limited resources and lack of knowledge, as well as highly skewed data. In studying over 22 Industry sectors for the last 20-years in hopes of keeping my company at the forefront of the cleaning industry, I have seen my fair share of research which did not fit my actual knowledge of the industry as an insider or observations thru careful analysis. Recently a research student contacted me to send me a free copy of a research project they did on the Franchising Industry. Sounds great, as it is free right? Well, sure free is a good price indeed, yet the research student and college was in India and it was a study of the franchising Industry World Wide. Being deeply involved in the Industry and having wrote books on the subject, I respectfully declined my free copy noting; I appreciate your offer, really I do. Yet, I have experiences, observed and follow the trends, so I find it difficult to understand what information could come from academia that I would not already know. I find academia views of things to be quite skewed and non-understanding of reality. Do you have justification of why I would want your academia-jaded knowledge as perceived by someone who has never done it? Franchising I mean? Is this unfair of a comment to the academia world? It is better to make them feel all warm and fuzzy about their work and stay Politically Correct? Or is it better to save the trees to print it and the fuel to ship the research book, if you really do not want it? Additionally isnt it better to send a message to academia to stop putting out bogus crap or half-backed claims, which in turn are used by worthless politicians to make policy, effecting jobs, tax base, industry and our economic engine? Instead I asked; If you will send me a summary, I will review it and if appropriate, then I will be glad to post it on our website to help you alert the World about your research and book at my leading industry website Franchising.org Additionally I asked the question that everyone should ask when someone tells them that they have proof of their argument due to a study from academia; Can you convince me, why this information is worthy of note? I would be interested in our justification. Of course I got no reply and therefore I rest my case. Do not trust academia research on industry, any industry, unless you know the facts and can check their data. Think on this. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board.
